The Ideal Breast Enlargment Candidate

Women seek out breast augmentation for many different reasons. Apart from general dissatisfaction with their breast size, some women have asymmetrical breasts that they want to bring into balance, while others have lost volume and firmness in their breasts after pregnancy, age, or major weight loss.

Generally speaking, the ideal breast augmentation candidate should meet the following basic qualifications:

  • In good overall health with no major medical problems
  • 18+ years old (for saline breast implants); 22+ years old (for silicone breast implants)
  • Informed about the procedure, including risks and benefits
  • Has realistic expectations and clear cosmetic goals

Poor Breast Augmentation Candidates

You may not be a good candidate for breast augmentation if you have:

  • An unhealthy lifestyle or are medically unfit for surgery
  • Not fully developed physically
  • Unrealistic expectations
  • Low self-esteem

Although we definitely recommend that you seek the advice of those close to you when considering breast augmentation and implants, the decision to move forward with the procedure should ultimately be your own choice – not something you decide because you feel pressure from others.

Dr. Lefkovits and our friendly staff at Park Plaza Plastic Surgery can help you decide if breast augmentation is right for you physically, mentally, and emotionally.

What is the Best Age for Breast Augmentation?

The best age for breast enlargement varies depending upon the individual. But patients should be over 18 years of age so that full development of the breast has occurred, in addition to being psychologically ready for a breast augmentation procedure.

A good age for many patients to get breast implants is in their early 20's when most have not yet undergone childbirth, with its attendant changes to the breasts. Your 20's can be a particularly difficult time for maintaining self-esteem, and having larger breasts can restore the confidence needed to maximize one's sense of sexuality and sexual attractiveness.

Some patients are ready for breast augmentation only after childbirth, when their breasts have lost volume and often sagging. While breast augmentation, and sometimes lifting, will restore the desired appearance of the breasts, future pregnancies may further affect the breasts in size and/or drooping.

Choosing a Surgeon to Perform Your Breast Augmentation

When choosing a surgeon to perform your breast enlargement procedure you need to use several criteria.

First, you must make certain that your plastic surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This is the only board that is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties, and is essentially a seal of approval attesting that he/she has undergone a rigorous plastic surgery program and has passed a comprehensive and difficult 2-part examination.

Please be aware that there are other specialists who call themselves “cosmetic surgeons” but who are not plastic surgeons. They may be ear, nose and throat surgeons or other specialists who have no real training in breast augmentation other than a short course. You should verify their Board certification by asking to see their certificate.

Second, you want to make sure that your surgeon has extensive experience with breast augmentation. Some plastic surgeons specialize in hand or reconstructive surgery. You want to be certain that your surgeon performs many breast augmentations on an ongoing basis.

Third, you want to see photos to get an idea of the surgeon’s work. Check to see that the breast implants look natural and seem to be proportionate. Look at the shape and contour of the breasts and see if you would be happy with them. But be aware that results vary from patient to patient, as do things like scarring and time to heal.

Fourth, make sure that your surgeon explains the surgery in detail and the post-op course, including possible complications. You should feel well-informed at the end of the consultation.

Finally, it is important that you feel comfortable with your surgeon and have a good rapport. This will alleviate much of your anxiety and increase your confidence.

Preparing for Your Breast Implant Procedure

Breast Augmentation NYC

If you select Dr. Lefkovits as your breast enlargment surgeon, he will give you some basic dos and don’ts.  It is absolutely essential that if you are a smoker that you stop smoking 2-3 weeks prior to surgery. You will need to refrain from certain medications such as aspirin (or aspirin-like products) as well as certain vitamins such as vitamin E. You will need to undergo a physical examination as well some blood tests.

You will be advised to have a preoperative mammogram if you are over the age of 40 and/or if there is a history warranting such testing.

You will be prescribed medication including pain medication; many doctors prescribe antibiotics as well.

Beyond these steps, you should undergo breast augmentation when there is no undue stress in your life. Surgery itself, no matter what, is associated with some degree of stress. Choosing the right surgeon and having the surgery during a calm period in your life will go a long way to ensuring that you have as stress-free an operation as possible.

Breast Enlargement to Correct Asymmetry

Almost every woman experiences some asymmetry in her breasts. One may be slightly larger. One may sag slightly lower than the other. But when the difference between your breasts is too large, it can affect the way you look in clothes, make it difficult to buy properly supportive bras, and make you feel very self conscious about your body.

With breast augmentation you can select the size you would like both of your breasts to be and in consultation with Dr. Lefkovits you can choose the type of implant, silicone or saline, and the size of implant for your breasts. When correcting asymmetry, Dr. Lefkovits will recommend different sized implants for each breast so that your final results will be even and natural looking.

Breast Augmentation Revision Surgery

Breast augmentation surgery can also be used to correct problems with your breast implants. Whether you've had an implant rupture or are unsatisfied with the results of another surgeon, Dr. Lefkovits can perform a breast implant revision procedure to correct these issues with your implants.

Revision surgery is often more difficult than an initial breast augmentation procedure. Dr. Lefkovits treats each patient as an individual and considers your specific aesthetic goals and needs when recommending and performing procedures.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Following breast augmentation you will be placed in a special surgical bra provided by our office. Upon returning home, it is important to stay out of bed as much as possible and keep yourself moving.

Do not do anything strenuous, but walking around is great for recovery. It is also very important to take deep breaths to expand your lungs after surgery. The stitches are usually dissolvable, so you will not have to return for suture removal. Many patients may return to non-strenuous work after a long weekend, and most will return to work within 1 week.

What to Expect After Breast Augmentation Surgery

Postoperative pain usually subsides after the first 24-48 hours after the breast skin envelope adjusts to the pressure of the implant.

Exercise may be started after two weeks. This may include lower legs, biking, swimming and gentle jogging or stair stepping machines.  Pectoral muscles exercises may be started after four to six weeks, but it is important to note that there are individual variations in the healing process, and ultimately, it will be up to your surgeon to guide you along the way.

Swelling will begin to subside within the first week, but its full resolution takes several months (most of which is not visible). Your breasts will continue to change; initially they may appear to be a bit high and somewhat firm. After approximately six weeks, you will get a fairly good picture of what your breasts will look like. Please bear in mind that healing takes about one year, so your breasts may experience changes for up to one year.

Breast Augmentation Surgery Risks and Complications

Every surgery comes with some degree of risk. Breast augmentation Surgery is no different. However, when it is performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Lefkovits, the risk of complications associated with breast augmentation is extremely low.

Dr. Lefkovits uses meticulous surgical methods and adheres to high standards of safety and sterility throughout the breast augmentation process to help minimize risks whenever possible. There are also ways you can reduce your own risk level as a patient.

General Breast Implants Surgical Risks

Some of the basic risks associated with breast augmentation surgery are:

  • Excessive bleeding
  • Infection
  • Excessive scarring
  • Implant rejection
  • Hematoma (blood vessel breakage)
  • Seroma (fluid collection beneath the skin)
  • Blood clots

Each of these risks can be avoided by closely following Dr. Lefkovits’ post-surgical instructions. For example, your risk of blood clots can be mitigated by getting out of bed almost immediately after surgery and taking gentle walks.

Risks of Anesthesia

Breast augmentation is performed under anesthesia. The type of anesthesia Dr. Lefkovits uses will depend on the extent of your procedure, and a number of other factors. There are two basic approaches:

  • General anesthesia – You are fully asleep throughout your breast augmentation procedure.
  • Conscious sedation and local anesthesia – Your level of consciousness is altered, but you are not fully asleep. You may have vague memories of your procedure, but time will seem to move quickly, and you will be comfortable.

General anesthesia comes with certain inherent risks that will be assessed ahead of time by Dr. Lefkovits, such as an increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, allergic reaction, aspiration (when you accidentally inhale something into your respiratory tract), and nausea. If you are in strong metabolic health and do not have any major medical conditions, these risks should not be a concern. However, they can exacerbate existing medical problems in patients who are not in strong overall health. Dr. Lefkovits will evaluate your health ahead of time to determine whether or not general anesthesia is safe for you.

Cosmetic Breast Augmentation Complications

Some breast augmentation complications are purely cosmetic in nature, affecting the appearance of your breasts only.

A few of the most common cosmetic breast augmentation complications include:

  • Rippling – This occurs when the surface of the breast implant wrinkles, and the irregularities show through the skin (or can be felt through the skin). This usually happens with saline breast implants when they are placed in women who have overly thin breast tissue. Rippling can be anticipated and avoided by using different breast implant placement methods and breast implant types.
  • Bottoming out – If there is not enough tissue to support your breast implants, they can slip below your inframammary crease (the fold line where your breasts meet your chest).
  • Unsatisfactory results – If you choose a plastic surgeon who does not clearly communicate with you before surgery, or who is simply not skilled enough to create the look you were after, you may be unhappy with your final results.
