If you don't like the size and shape of your nose, it can make you unhappy with your entire appearance. As the central focus point of the face, your nose plays a large role in your overall look. Fortunately, although you have lived with your nose for many years, you don't have to live with it for any longer. Nose surgery, also called rhinoplasty, can correct almost any complaint you may have about the shape of your nose to give you a more harmonious appearance overall, an appearance you can feel comfortable and confident with.
To learn more about nose surgery and how it can help you to feel less self-conscious about the appearance of your face, please call or email New York plastic surgeon Dr. George Lefkovits for a consultation today.
Common Complaints about the Nose
Many people feel uncomfortable and unhappy with the shape of their nose. This includes feelings that the nose:
- Is too, long, large, or wide
- Is too small
- Is crooked
- Has a hooked or droopy tip
- Has a large tip
- Has a bump or hump
- Has the wrong slope
- Has nostrils that are too wide
Fortunately, rhinoplasty can correct all these complaints about the appearance of the nose. Sometimes, rhinoplasty may also address the function of the nose, such as when function is impaired by a deviated septum (the structure separating the nostrils) or enlarged turbinates (structures along the side of the nostrils). In these cases, nose surgery may be covered by health insurance. Rhinoplasty may be performed at any time after the nose has reached its full size, generally about age 15 or 16.
The Rhinoplasty Procedure for Men
The shape of the nose is largely determined by the cartilage and bone inside the nose, and the goal of rhinoplasty is to reshape these deep structures and then drape the skin appropriately over them to give a natural-looking result.
In most cases, the reshaping can be performed without any need for external incisions. Sometimes, it is necessary to make an incision on the outside of the nose, most often in the columella, the skin that divides the nostrils. This incision typically heals very well and remains only a subtle line at the base of the nose.
Male Rhinoplasty Recovery and Results
After your rhinoplasty, your nose will be bandaged and may have packing inserted. The packing will remain in place for one to two days, and you will be asked to focus on rest and recovery. There will be bruising and swelling, accompanied by some discomfort, which can generally be controlled with medication. You may be able to return to most activities within one month. Bruising can be concealed with makeup at this point. The results of your rhinoplasty will continue to change and improve subtly over many months. You may not see the final results until as long as a year after surgery.
Why Choose Dr. Lefkovits for Your Rhinoplasty
Although most plastic surgeons offer rhinoplasty, this is a procedure where you should take extra care in selecting your surgeon. Because of its prominence on your face, mistakes in performing a rhinoplasty cannot be concealed. Therefore, it makes sense to select a surgeon who is maximally qualified to perform the operation. Some plastic surgeons do not have a full background in working with the complicated structures of the nose and throat, such as an otolaryngologist. Dr. Lefkovits is double board-certified in both plastic surgery and otolaryngology, meaning he has received specialized training in operating on these structures.
