Women are constantly battling excess fat on their bodies, which accumulates over time with age and from pregnancy. Liposuction is the most common body contouring operation performed across the United States and in Dr. George Lefkovits‘s New York, New York, cosmetic surgery office. Liposuction is a procedure that can help sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas, including:

  • Abdomen
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Knees
  • Upper arms
  • Chin
  • Cheeks
  • Neck

Dr. Lefkovits performs liposuction in our New York, New York, cosmetic surgery office, usually under general anesthesia. Some liposuction cases may be performed under local anesthesia with or without sedation. There are several liposuction techniques that can be used to improve the ease of the procedure and enhance the outcome.

At Park Plaza Plastic Surgery, we are proud to be on the cutting edge of new technology. That’s why we’re now using SculpSure laser sculpting at our New York City location.

Dr. Lefkovits uses Tumescent liposuction, which consists of a diluted anesthetic solution mixed with epinephrine. This allows the extraction of large amounts of fat because of decreased blood loss. Liposuction can usually be performed in multiple areas at the same time.

Through this process, large volumes of fluid — sometimes as much as three times the amount of fat to be removed — are injected into the body. This technique is typically performed on patients who need only a local anesthetic, and it usually takes longer than traditional liposuction. The name of this technique refers to the swollen and firm (tumesced) state of the fatty tissues when they are filled with solution.

Benefits of the Tumescent Liposuction Technique

  • Smaller incisions
  • Less invasive micro-cannulas are used
  • More gradual, targeted and metered treatment
  • Contouring an area is more effective
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Uses local anesthesia
  • Less blood and fluid loss

Liposuction is normally very safe. After surgery, you will likely experience some fluid drainage from the incisions. Occasionally, a small drainage tube may be inserted beneath the skin for a couple of days to prevent fluid build-up. To control swelling and help your skin better fit its new contours, you may be fitted with a girdle to wear over the treated area for a few weeks.

Do not expect to look or feel great right after surgery. Even though newer techniques are believed to reduce post-operative discomforts, you may still experience pain, burning and swelling.

After the liposuction procedure, Dr. Lefkovits’ patients will begin a course of massage and ultrasound treatments, which are performed at our New York City office. Post-op measures help to expedite the healing process following liposuction. Exercise can begin in a limited fashion two weeks after the liposuction procedure. You can usually return to work in a few days to one week.
